This course trains crew to be able to launch and take charge of a survival craft or rescue boat in emergency situations, in accordance with section A-VI/2 of the STCW Code. Seafarers requiring deck certificates of competency must complete this STCW course as part of their Officer training.

                          Course Name:

                          Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (Other than fast rescue boats) – STCW A-VI/2

                          Course Aim:

                          The purpose of this course is to provide students with the knowledge and training so that they become competent to operate life-saving appliances and take charge of a survival craft/rescue boat during or after launch.
                          Students will become proficient with how to manage survivors & the survival craft after abandoning ship whilst being capable of using all locating devices such as pyrotechnics and signaling/communication apparatus.

                          This course is designed in accordance with IMO Model course 1.23

                          Course Structure

                          This course consists of 32 hours of tuition split over 4 days.

                          Tuition will be given by means of classroom lectures, demonstration & practical work.

                          3. Abandon ship
                          4. Survival craft and rescue boats
                          5. Launching arrangements
                          6. Evacuation & recovery of survival craft & rescue boats
                          7. Actions to take when clear of the ship
                          8. Lifeboat engine & accessories
                          9. Rescue boat outboard engine
                          10. Handling survival craft & rescue boats in rough weather
                          11. Actions to take when aboard a survival craft
                          12. Methods of helicopter rescue
                          13. Danger of Hypothermia
                          14. Radio equipment
                          15. First Aid
                          16. Launch/Recovery drills

                          Entry Requirements

                          To be eligible to attend this course, students must fulfil the following requirements:

                          • Hold a valid seafarers medical certificate
                          •  Hold an STCW Basic Safety Training certificate
                          • Be not less than 18 years of age
                          • Have approved seagoing service of not less than 12 months or have attended an approved training course and have approved seagoing service of not less than six months
