Defining the future of Superyacht training: Launch of the Erasmus+ Superyacht Qualifications Framework Project

New initiative to establish unified training standards and career pathways across the superyacht sector.

A consortium of leading organisations from across Europe has officially launched the Superyacht Qualifications Framework (SYQF) Project, a landmark initiative that will create the first comprehensive qualifications structure dedicated to the superyacht industry.

Bringing together partners from Malta, France, Italy, Greece, and the United Kingdom, the SYQF Project aims to address one of the industry’s most persistent challenges – the lack of a unified, recognised system for training and career development. While the superyacht sector continues to expand globally, training remains fragmented and inconsistent. The SYQF will provide a structured framework that defines qualifications, establishes clear career pathways, and integrates sustainability, digital skills, and inclusivity into professional development.

The SYQF will bring structure and recognition to one of the most dynamic sectors of the maritime industry,” said Pauline Micallef, CEO of MaritimeMT. “Our mission is to develop a clear, quality-assured framework that aligns with real-world needs – ensuring that professionals at all levels are equipped to meet the challenges of a modern, sustainable superyacht industry.

The 30-month project, coordinated by MaritimeMT and managed under Malta’s EUPA National Agency, will conclude by February 2026. The first transnational meeting will be held in Malta at the end of November 2025, where consortium partners will begin discussions on the project’s direction and methodology – including how information and data will be collected from key industry stakeholders throughout the project’s lifecycle.

This initiative will finally give superyacht professionals a defined and recognised path for career growth,” added Hein Velema, Director of the Superyacht Alliance for Professional Standards. “It’s about setting a common standard that reflects the professionalism, expertise, and excellence this industry demands.

By aligning education and training with the needs of a changing sector, the SYQF will strengthen workforce mobility, improve training quality, and support the long-term sustainability and innovation of the superyacht industry.

The SYQF consortium includes:

  • MaritimeMT (Malta) – Project Leader & Coordinator
  • Superyacht Alliance for Professional Standards (Malta)
  • Professional Yachting Association (France)
  • Blue Water (France)
  • Italian Super Yacht Life (Istituto Tecnologico Superiore) (Italy)
  • Metropolitan College (Greece)
  • International Association of Maritime Institutes (IAMI) (UK – Associate Partner)

Together, the partners combine extensive experience across superyacht training, operations, and shore-based services. Their collaboration will ensure the SYQF reflects the realities of work both at sea and ashore – in marinas, ports, and shipyards – setting a new benchmark for skills, professionalism, and career development across the global superyacht sector.
