              Course Name:

              Leadership and Teamwork (Operational Level)

              Course Aim:

              On completion of the course, the trainee should be able to demonstrate sufficient understanding and knowledge of leadership and team working and have the relevant skills to completely carry out the duties of an officer in charge of a navigational watch on ships of 500GT or more, or officer in charge of an engineering watch in a manned engine-room or designated duty engineer in a periodically unmanned engine-room.

              This course is sometimes also referred to as HELM Operational Level and is designed in accordance with the IMO Model Course 1.39.

              Course Structure

              This course consists of 20 hours of tuition split over 2.5 days.

              Tuition will be given by means of classroom lectures, class engagement & simulated exercises.

              Students shall be actively encouraged to fully participate in class discussions by drawing on their past experiences with regards to leadership & teamwork.

              Unit:
              1. Working knowledge of shipboard personnel management and training.
              2. Knowledge of related international maritime conventions, recommendations and national legislation.
              3. Ability to apply task and workload management.
              4. Knowledge and ability to apply effective resource management.
              5. Knowledge and ability to apply decision making techniques.

              To be eligible to attend this course, students must fulfil the following requirements:

              It is assumed that trainees undertaking this course will, through previous qualifications and onboard experience, have sufficient familiarity with shipboard operations to understand that leadership and team working is an essential part of their role on board.
