          Description

          Course Name:

          Advanced Fire Fighting– STCW A-VI/3

          Course Aim:

          This course aims to provide students with the knowledge & training to enable them to take command, organise & train fire parties and control firefighting operations. They shall also become knowledgeable on how to safely inspect & service fire detection and extinguishing systems.

          This course is designed in accordance with IMO model course 2.03.

          Course Structure

          This course consists of 29 hours of tuition split over 4 days.

          Tuition will be given by means of classroom lectures, demonstrations & practical work.

          Unit:

          1. Control firefighting operations onboard ship
          • Tactics & procedures of fire control at sea
          • Tactics & procedures of fire control in port
          • Tactics & procedures of fire control when carrying dangerous goods
          • Tactics & procedures of fire control for oil, chemical or gas tankers
          • Management & control of injured persons
          • Co-ordination procedures with shore-based firefighters

          2. Organise & train fire parties
          • Contingency plans
          • Fire party composition & allocation
          • Training of seafarers in firefighting
          • Fire control plans
          • Fire & abandon ship drills

          3. Inspect & service fire detection and extinguishing systems/equipment
          • Fire detection equipment
          • Fixed fire extinguishing equipment 
          • Fire main, hydrants, hoses, nozzles & pumps
          • Portable & mobile fire extinguishing equipment
          • Firefighting outfits & PPE
          • Rescue, salvage & life support equipment

          4. Investigate and compile reports on incidents involving fire
          • Fire investigation & reporting procedure
          • Documented incident reports- lessons learned

          Entry Requirements

          To be eligible to attend this course, students must fulfil the following requirements:

          • Be 16 years or older
          • Hold a valid STCW basic fire prevention and firefighting certificate (A-VI/1-2)
          • Hold a valid seafarers medical certificate (IMO/ILO)
