About This Job

To ensure the safe, compliant, and efficient daily operations of assigned tanker vessels and bunker barges. The Marine Superintendent provides operational support, monitors compliance with statutory and company requirements (especially ISM/ISPS/MLC), manages shipboard documentation and certification cycles, and facilitates the shore service coordination.

Key Responsibilities

1. Vessel Operational Oversight

  • Monitor the daily running of assigned company vessels via noon reports, operational updates, and direct crew communication.
  • Follow up on issues related to navigation, mooring, deck equipment, cargo system, and the hygienic upkeep of the accommodation.
  • Liaise closely with Masters and Chief Officers to ensure smooth port calls, cargo transfers, and STS operations.

2. Certificate & Documentation Management

  • Track and coordinate the renewal of all statutory certificates, class certificates and other regulatory certificates which are required from port authorities.
  • Ensure timely inspections and surveys are arranged with class societies, flag states, and relevant authorities.
  • Maintain up-to-date vessel certification status in the company database/ship management software.
  • Maintain all company equipment and its certification, as well as conduct necessary audits and inspections in the management office.

3. Safety Equipment & External Service Coordination

  • Arrange visits by approved service providers for periodic inspection and servicing of:
  • Lifeboats and davits
  • Life rafts, lifejackets, and fire extinguishers
  • Fire detection systems, fixed firefighting systems, BA sets, gas detectors
  • Ensure services are planned well in advance to avoid port delays and certificate lapses.

4. ISM / ISPS / MLC Compliance

  • Monitor vessel compliance with ISM Code and ensure all safety management procedures are followed onboard.
  • Review monthly safety and drill reports, safety committee minutes, and non-conformance reports.
  • Co-ordinate internal audits and follow up on corrective actions from external audits and inspections.
  • Ensure ship staff are updated with latest safety circulars, company policies, and regulatory changes.
  • Coordinate with the procurement team to prioritize urgent items and ensure cost-effective purchasing.
  • Monitor budget utilization for marine-related consumables and services.

5. Port State, Vetting, and Flag State Preparation

  • Ensure vessels are prepared for Port State Control, SIRE 2.0, Flag State, and internal inspections.
  • Guide Masters and senior officers in handling checklists, documentation, and pre-inspection preparations.

6. Crew Support & Training

  • Assist Masters and Chief Officers with procedural clarifications and operational decision-making.
  • Follow up on competence of deck crew in safety procedures and drills.
  • Participate in crew briefings, handovers, and vessel familiarization when required.
  • Review endorsements (oil and/or chemical) and familiarity with STS operations for bunker barges.

Key Competencies

  • Good knowledge of ISM, ISPS, MARPOL, SOLAS, MLC, STCW.
  • Familiar with class and flag certification systems.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and decision-making skills.
