Course Name:
Proficiency in Medical Care- STCW A-VI/4-2
Course Aim:
On completion of this course, students shall be proficient in the following tasks, amongst others:
- Be able to participate in coordinated schemes for medical assistance on ships at sea;
- To provide the sick and injured a satisfactory standard of medical care while they remain on board.
This course is designed in accordance with IMO Model Course 1.15.

Course Structure
This course consists of 45.5 hours of tuition split over 5 days.
Tuition will be given by means of classroom lectures, demonstrations & practical work on the following modules:
1. First Aid
2. Care of Casualties
3. Aspects of Nursing
4. Diseases
5. Alcohol & Drug Abuse
6. Dental Care
7. Gynaecology & Pregnancy
8. Medical Care of Rescued Persons, including Distress, Hypothermia & Cold Exposure
9. Death at Sea
10. Environmental Control on Board Ship
11. Disease Prevention
12. Keeping of Records
13. Medicines & Medical Equipment
14. Surgical Equipment, Instruments & Supplies
15. External Assistance
Entry Requirements
To be eligible to attend this course, students must fulfil the following requirements:
- Be 16 years or older
- Hold a valid Proficiency in Medical First Aid Certificate STCW VI/4-1
