This course is for seafarers designated to provide first aid on board ship and for those requiring certificates of competency.

Course Name:
Proficiency in Medical First Aid- STCW A-VI/4-1
Course Aim:
On completion of this course, students should become proficient in the following tasks, amongst others:
- Be able to participate effectively in coordinated schemes for medical assistance on ships at sea.
- Provide immediate First Aid to the sick or injured with a satisfactory standard while they remain on board.
This course is designed in accordance with IMO Model Course 1.14.

Course Structure
This course consists of 30 hours of tuition split over 4 days.
Tuition will be given by means of classroom lectures, demonstrations & practical work on the following modules:
1. Immediate Action
2. First-Aid Kit
3. Body Structure & Function
4. Toxicological Hazards on Board Ship
5. Examination of a Patient
6. Spinal Injuries
7. Burns, Scalds & Effects of Heat & Cold
8. Fractures, Dislocations & Muscular Injuries
9. Medical Care of Rescued Persons, including Distress, Hypothermia & Cold Exposure
10. Radio Medical Advice
11. Pharmacology
12. Sterilisation
13. Cardiac Arrest, Drowning & Asphyxia
14. Psychological/ Psychiatric Problems
Entry Requirements
To be eligible to attend this course, students must fulfil the following requirements:
- Be 17 years or older
- Hold a valid Elementary First Aid Certificate (STCW A-VI/1-3)
