Setting the Standard: The New DEI Unit for the Superyacht Industry
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) has moved from a general human resources concept to a core operational and safety standard within the maritime sector. Developed under the Superyacht Qualifications Framework (SYQF) and aligned with the IAMI GUEST unit specification framework, the new DEI in Yachting unit establishes clear professional benchmarks for both sea-going crew and shore-side management.
This unit approaches DEI through practical competence rather than abstract theory. It directly connects inclusive practice to crew welfare, psychological safety, operational performance, and risk mitigation across the full ship-to-shore ecosystem.
Structure and Learning Outcomes
The unit is structured around five core Learning Outcomes (LOs) that integrate measurable Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours (KSBs):
- Principles of DEI in the Maritime Context
Learners explore the core definitions of diversity, equity, inclusion, and equality within yacht operations. A key focus is distinguishing between equality (providing identical provision) and equity (adjusting support to account for differing starting points without lowering professional standards). Crucially, the outcome addresses the link between psychological safety and operational safety, demonstrating how exclusionary cultures can prevent crew from speaking up during critical operations such as docking or navigation.
- Gender Balance and Career Progression
This outcome addresses historical barriers in the superyacht sector, particularly around traditionally gender-coded roles in engineering, deck, and interior departments. Learners analyse points where experienced talent exits the industry, evaluate sea-to-shore transition pathways, and learn to reframe performance appraisals to eliminate gender-coded language and double standards in leadership assessment.
- Fair Recruitment and Progression
The unit equips hiring Managers, Captains, and recruiters to mitigate cognitive shortcuts such as affinity bias and the halo effect. Practical exercises include conducting blind CV audits, rewriting gender-coded job descriptions, and implementing objective, competency-based scoring matrices grounded strictly in measurable qualifications and technical capability.
- Inclusive Communication and Mitigating Bias
Focusing on daily operational realities, this section examines how microaggressions and confirmation bias can escalate during high-pressure periods such as charter turnarounds, refits, and emergency responses. Learners develop practical skills in delivering inclusive briefings and applying professional intervention techniques, such as “calling in” or “calling out” unacceptable conduct without unnecessary escalation.
- Workplace Policies and Social Responsibility
The final outcome connects vessel standing orders, safety management systems (SMS), and corporate policies into a single ecosystem. Learners audit standard operating procedures (SOPs) for inclusive language and map out robust reporting pathways for harassment and discrimination that protect crew confidentiality, prevent retaliation, and ensure contractor accountability during shipyard periods.
Applied Assessment and Industry Relevance
Designed for operational application and leadership awareness, the unit avoids rote memorisation. Assessment relies on scenario-based tasks, role-play demonstrations (such as inclusive briefings and recruitment panels), policy audits, and professional discussions. This ensures that participants can readily implement fair, objective, and transparent practices in their day-to-day duties.
Targeted at Captains, Heads of Department, Pursers, Crew agents, Yacht Managers, and Fleet Directors, the unit serves as a vital component of ongoing continuing professional development (CPD).
