Course Aim:

This course provides seafarers aiming to refresh their STCW certification with the necessary education and training as outlined in Table A-VI/3 of the STCW Code.

Course Structure

This course consists of 8 hours of classroom and practical tuition held over 1 day.

REVIEW OF:

1. Control firefighting operations onboard ship
• Tactics & procedures of fire control at sea
• Tactics & procedures of fire control in port
• Tactics & procedures of fire control when carrying dangerous goods
• Tactics & procedures of fire control for oil, chemical or gas tankers
• Management & control of injured persons
• Co-ordination procedures with shore based firefighters

2. Organise & train fire parties
• Contingency plans
• Fire party composition & allocation
• Training of seafarers in firefighting
• Fire control plans
• Fire & abandon ship drills

3. Inspect & service fire detection and extinguishing systems/equipment
• Fire detection equipment
• Fixed fire extinguishing equipment 
• Fire main, hydrants, hoses, nozzles & pumps
• Portable & mobile fire extinguishing equipment
• Firefighting outfits & PPE
• Rescue, salvage & life support equipment

4. Investigate and compile reports on incidents involving fire

Entry Requirements

To be eligible to attend this course, students must fulfil the following requirements:

  • Be 16 years or older
  • Hold a valid STCW Basic Fire Prevention and Firefighting certificate (A-VI/1-2)
  • Hold a valid seafarers medical certificate (IMO/ILO)
  • Hold a prior STCW Advanced Fire Fighting Certificate
